About Mourné
Set in the foothills of Mount Kedros, with fine views of both the Psiloritis and Lefka Ori mountain ranges, Mourné is a traditional village with whitewashed houses and narrow streets. Its many trees give it a green appearance even in summer and an ancient oak wood winds around the hillside to the south of the village. It has several ancient churches noted for their frescos and an amphitheatre built under the rocks where local celebrations and events form part of day to day life.
The village is ideally situated for people who wish to experience the traditional Cretan lifestyle and explore some of the island's most beautiful coastline. Situated just three kilometres from the popular mountain town of Spili, Mourné is perfect for living all year round and as a base for those who enjoy walking, bird watching and of course for flower lovers.
A short drive or longish walk of approx 7km through stunning scenery will bring you to Prevelli Monastery and Palm beach plus some of the finest beaches and coves on the south west coast (as seen on the Rough Guide to Crete 'best beaches' 10/01/09), including Agios Pavlos, Triopetra, Ligres, and the slightly more commercial Plakias. Rethymnon is just 20 minutes by car or bus from Spili.
The village has a Kafenion and a taverna and at the last count 5 donkeys, 36 cats, 12 dogs, 20 goats and numerous sheep and chickens. Travelling shops pass by several times a day selling anything and everything you could want, from fresh fish to carpets!
The community is extremely friendly and welcoming. Just wandering around the village you will witness a lifestyle that brings longevity and contentment.
Spili has all the facilities of a well resourced town including banks, health centre, supermarkets, post office, town hall and council offices, cafes and tavernas that are open all year round, plus a good range of shops selling local produce that bring people to visit during the summer. Spili is famous for its magnificent lion head fountain from which water gushes throughout the year. It has a very pleasant centre with a giant plane tree providing shade during the heat in mid summer.
